LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & Equity, Diversity and Inclusion STATEMENT

In the spirit and intent of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations, Theatre PANIK acknowledges the land on which we work and create is the traditional territory of many Nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples, and is home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. We acknowledge them and any other Nations who care for the land (acknowledged and unacknowledged, recorded and unrecorded) as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land, the traditional territory named Tkarón:to.

We recognize the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples on this land. We commit ourselves to recognizing and disrupting systems of oppression and the colonial forces that undermine, distort, or erase the vital role of Indigenous peoples in our world, and recognize stewardship as a shared responsibility of all those who reside in a territory, as is the spirit of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreements.

Theatre PANIK stands in solidarity with the members of the Black community, the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as with the global call for justice against racism and police brutality. We acknowledge the sustained suffering of the Black and Indigenous communities as a result of centuries of systemic inequities and racism. Theatre PANIK acknowledges and is grateful for the continued artistic leadership shown by Indigenous and Black theatre artists in our community, country and beyond. We would like to pay our respects to all artists of colour in our community who have continued to create theatre while being undermined by systems built on injustice, oppression and violence.

As Artistic Directors of Theatre PANIK, we are committed to recognizing our own place within these oppressive systems, to educating ourselves, to identifying our own biases and, above all, to be good allies and listeners. Theatre PANIK recognizes it has a part to play in the deconstruction of inequitable systems, and that even small acts carry meaning.

Theatre PANIK is dedicated to providing a healthy, safe, and productive work environment. We support those who have experienced or witnessed toxic behaviours. We will not tolerate conduct that is meant to undermine the dignity or value of an individual, or which creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment. We value our community, and condemn institutional oppression and all forms of harassment or discrimination. We are continually dedicated to creating theatre in the spirit of equity and inclusion and to fostering creative spaces for all.

Theatre PANIK encourages submissions from diverse artists of all backgrounds, regardless of race, colour, national origin, age, religion, creed, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
